It’s not just about Zemanta (but z-ta is cool)
May 6, 2008
This is not another wediaup post about Zemanta, but the concept they are pushing. I posted earlier today at tomaltman.com about how Zemanta is cool because of the way they operate. They updated their software today and released the news via twitter. Which is very cool, plus the fact it took me 0 (zero) seconds to install. Why? It’s Saas – software as a service.
This is a great model – because even if I was not on Twitter (but I am “vwtom” and so is this blog “wediaup“) as soon as i fired up my blog application it would have loaded the new version of the software.
That is why we are so pumped about Zemanta, Saas and the semantic web at wediaup. It’s just giving you what you need, when you need it. Now, let’s imagine we could do the same with content. We don;t need to go looking for content – content will find us. We just do what we do and content seeps in like a green ooze.
Pretty cool if you ask me.

OK, I like Zemanta, too, but frankly, I’m not all that impressed with its photo suggestions. Relevance (a kissing cousin of context) is key, and Zemanta has been hit and miss in my experience. Perhaps there’s a trick to it that I haven’t bothered to learn? Your two posts seem to support my argument, Tom. The Zemanta-found photo here is OK, but vwtom’s latte pic is off-kilter.

Zemanta as SaaS, I like it. We haven’t used this buzzword about it yet, but it makes sense. If you want, you can also call us BJAX we app – Browser Extension + Ajax, as we use firefox extension as delivery vehicle
@Annette: quite possibly. We’re still figuring out different blogging styles and tweaking our engine to work best. I’ll ask our engineers to take a look at the posts in your blog and try to improve image relevance.
With this new update you get more pictures, so you get more to choose. In general we recommend that you observe our suggestions as they arrive, and then use them as you see appropriate as we don’t automatically insert our suggestions without your approval.

Annette – I agree and disagree. (Of course)
I agree that zemanta is not perfect – but the concept is killer. And, it is getting better – the new interface is helpful (including zoom picture to preview better)
As far as the latte picture – I did have it up, then I made a couple of edits and found the software on the shelves picture a better match – so it may be my fault vs. zemanta.
Plus I think the resources (places zemanta can search) is what may be holding them back. Also – they rely on the tags and information the service they leverage has provided.
But as we move forward and more meta data is attached to more content…it certainly makes this type od data mining possible.
Good stuff!
